Mathematics, Physics and the Evolution of Gravity

Mathematics provided Einstein with the tools to develop the general theory of relativity, which transformed how we understand gravity. Concepts like non-Euclidean geometry and tensor calculus describe how spacetime curves in the presence of mass. In this talk, we will see how mathematics and physics worked hand in hand to revolutionize our view of the universe.


Sharmila Gunasekaran is currently an assistant professor in mathematical physics at the Radboud Universiteit Nijmegen. She works on mathematical problems arising in general relativity. These problems have intersections with the theory of hyperbolic partial differential equations and geometric analysis.
